New Scholar Consortium

The last convening of the Southwest Doctoral Consortium was in 2005. Many of us realize the benefit of a regional consortium and want to continue the tradition of meeting with our peers each year. Without a new sponsor, we did not know if this would be possible.

This year, we are hoping to start a new doctoral consortium tradition. We have been allotted up to four sessions on February 22, 2007, the first day of the Southwest Regional Meeting of the AAA. These sessions will be organized into the New Scholars Consortium. The preliminary schedule includes:

8:30 am-10:00 am Seminar in Research Using Archival Data
10:30 am-12:00 pm Seminar in Research Using Experimental Data
12:00 pm-1:30 pm Lunch
1:30 pm-3:00 pm Effective Teaching
3:30 pm-5:00 pm Publishing

The goal of the New Scholars Consortium is to provide a blanket overview of academia. All doctoral students and faculty representatives are welcome to attend, but we would especially like your first-year doctoral students to attend this event.

The New Scholars Consortium will be held at the Menger Hotel in San Antonio, Texas on February 22, 2007. A limited number of rooms have been reserved for the conference rate of $129/night, single or double. PLEASE make your reservations as early as possible to take advantage of this special room rate by calling 1-800-345-9285 (toll-free) or 1-210-223-4361 and be sure to reference the 2007 Southwest Region Meeting. Saturday night rooms so close to the River Walk go fast! Rooms will be held at this rate until January 27, 2007. The Menger Hotel is located in the heart of downtown San Antonio and is within easy walking distance of a number of other hotels.

The registration fee for the New Scholars Consortium is $25 for doctoral students and $35 for faculty representatives. The registration fee includes lunch. Travel and hotel costs are the responsibility of the attendees and their home program. The deadline for early registration is February 5, 2007. Print and complete the New Scholar Consortium Registration Form. If paying by credit card you can fax the form to the AAA at 941-923-4093. Checks should be made payable to the American Accounting Association and mailed to 5717 Bessie Drive, Sarasota, FL 34233-2399.
