We gratefully acknowledge the support of Deloitte U.S. Firms
for the 2008 ABO Doctoral Consortium.

The Accounting, Behavior, and Organizations Section of the AAA is pleased to announce its third Doctoral Consortium. The Consortium will be held in conjunction with the annual ABO Research Conference in Providence, Rhode Island on October 10th and 11th. The Consortium will be moderated by Laureen Maines. The Consortium should be of interest to PhD students interested in conducting behavioral research. New faculty (i.e., first three years post PhD) also will be considered for attendance to the consortium if space is available.

The research session portion of the Consortium will take place the morning of Friday, October 10th immediately prior to the ABO Research Conference. Four well-known researchers, all of whom currently are editors at TAR, will provide insights on conducting behavioral research in their area of expertise: Jim Hunton (Bentley College/information systems), Kathryn Kadous (Emory University/auditing), Ranjani Krishnan (Michigan State University/visiting Harvard University/managerial accounting), and Laureen Maines (Indiana University/financial accounting). A second session will follow in which attendees will form small groups and meet with the four top scholars.  This session is intended to allow attendees the opportunity to meet other attendees and top scholars in an informal setting.

The Consortium will begin with a reception and career panel discussion on Thursday, October 9 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Several accounting faculty at various career stages, including Andrea Drake (Louisiana Tech) and Dave Piercey (Massachusetts), will provide advice about initial job placements and strategies for success in research and teaching. We encourage all participants who can arrive by late afternoon on Thursday to attend the reception and career panel discussion.

Consortium and Conference registration is free for student members of the AAA (students need not be members of the ABO section). Registration includes Friday and Saturday breakfast and lunch as well as an appetizer reception on Friday. In addition, two nights hotel will be paid by the ABO section for up to 30 PhD student registrants. Students will share a room with another student participant, with hotel pairings made by ABO. For students receiving free rooms for two nights, the cost of the Consortium and Conference will thus be only the cost of transportation and dinner on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and possibly one night of hotel if needed. This makes the Consortium and Conference a very affordable opportunity for students.

Applications for the Consortium should be sent to Laureen Maines at lmaines@indiana.edu by August 28.  Students attending the consortium are automatically registered for the conference.  New faculty accepted for the consortium will need to register for the conference.

To be considered for the free hotel room, students must submit their application forms by August 28.  Preference will be given to students who did not receive free hotel rooms at the 2007 ABO conference.

We are excited about this opportunity to bring together young behavioral researchers and more experienced researchers in the field to exchange ideas and experiences. We hope that you will be able to attend.
