Accounting is vital to the efficient and equitable functioning of the nation's financial system. The Commission on Accounting Higher Education, established by the AAA and AICPA, is in the process of examining the challenges and opportunities that our accounting education and professional communities are uniquely prepared to address. The Commission is taking a visionary approach to accounting education to meet the human capital needs of the profession in the coming decades. New educational pathways to our profession are being explored and old pathways revisited to achieve the outcomes required given the forces of globalization, intriguing and unpredictable new technologies, increasing societal diversity, and economic complexity.

Session 3.2: Strategies for Achieving Research-Teaching Synergies by Gail Hoover King

As accounting faculty members today we are expected to be great teachers and scholars as well as good community citizens. This requires an ability to work efficiently and effectively. This session will discuss strategies for achieving teaching-research synergies, i.e., taking a course activity and achieving multiple objectives. The key is adequate planning, which will allow the accounting faculty member to develop learning activities that can be used to 1) improve teaching, 2) assess learning (for course-embedded and/or program-level assessment), and 3) develop scholarship. Come with a learning objective and activity in mind (such as exam, quizzes, projects, cases) and develop an effective assessment and research plan in conjunction with this activity!
