Doctoral Consortium
Doctoral Student Application Process
The Financial Accounting & Reporting Section Doctoral Consortium will be held Friday morning, January 28th, 2011, at the Marriott Tampa Waterside Hotel in Tampa, Florida prior to the 2011 Financial Accounting & Reporting Section Midyear Meeting, which is held on Friday afternoon on January 28th and on Saturday, January 29th. Students are nominated by doctoral granting schools. To encourage doctoral student attendance, FARS makes a substantial financial commitment to the Consortium. FARS will waive the student registration fee for the FARS Conference, waive the lunch ticket fees for the Friday and Saturday lunches, and pay for one-night's lodging for those attending the Doctoral Consortium. If two students share a room, the Section will cover two nights’ accommodation (i.e., one night for each participant). In the latter case, both students’ names must appear on the hotel registration to be eligible for reimbursement. Students will receive an expense reimbursement form at the conference, which they will return to AAA headquarters with their lodging receipt for reimbursement.
The total number of students who can attend the Consortium is limited. The application deadline is November 15th. This application does NOT ensure participation in the 2011 Financial Accounting & Reporting Section Doctoral Consortium. Applications will be reviewed and applicants will receive notification of being accepted or waitlisted on or about December 3rd, 2010. Given the limited number of students who may attend, the Financial Accounting & Reporting Section plans to only allow students to attend the consortium once during the student’s Ph.D. program. In the event that the student limit is not reached, repeat attendance may be allowed, but the Section will not provide a reduced registration fee or pay for lodging for those who previously attended.
Doctoral Student Eligibility
The Consortium is open to all Ph.D. students who have an interest in financial research. Students may be at any stage in their program, although students nearing the dissertation stage may get the most benefit from participation. The 2011 FARS Midyear Meeting includes a Recruiting Reception on Thursday, January 28th, 2011. The reception is intended for PhD students seeking academic placement and faculty at schools seeking to fill open positions. Students wishing to engage in recruiting activities on Friday morning should not plan to attend the Doctoral Consortium. It is expected that a limit of 2 students from any one university will be allowed to attend unless there are openings after each school has had the opportunity to nominate 2 students. Priority will be given to students who have not attended a prior FARS Doctoral Consortium. Please rank order the students you would like to nominate from your school.
