2011 AAA Public Interest Section Doctoral/New Scholar Consortium
Sponsored by the Kenneth G. Dixon School of Accounting
University of Central Florida

"Developing and Sustaining a Passion for Research"

The consortium is designed to help doctoral students, new scholars, and others interested in public interest accounting research find a desire and motivation to begin and remain engaged with public interest research in accounting. We will have presentations and discussions led by three public interest accounting researchers who have a passion for their research programs.

Presenters are:

  1. Dr. Barbara Merino, University of North Texas. Barbara is a leader in public interest accounting research, focusing on accounting history and critical accounting research. She understands the philosophy of social science better than anybody. Her 1982 paper in AOS, coauthored with Tinker and Neimark, is a classic and a must-read for everyone in academic accounting. She continues to undertake and publish extremely interesting and timely public interest accounting research. Barbara's session will focus on the importance of doing what you have a passion for rather than "simply following the yellow brick road to success." She will help us debunk the illusion there is a certified path to knowledge.

  2. Dr. Den Patten, Illinois State University. Den is a leader in environmental accounting research. He is an "environmentalist who studies accounting." He has been and still is a master at using the research tools learned in mainstream accounting PhD programs to investigate how corporations (mis)manage their environmental strategies and reporting. Den will help us learn how to take one's intrinsic motivation to help society and translate it into a rewarding research program.

  3. Dr. Amy Hageman, Kansas State University. Amy recently graduated from UCF with a PhD in Accounting and has jumpstarted a taxation research program with a public interest orientation. She has already published her research in several very high quality journals and has several great projects in process. Amy has taken a multi-paradigm approach to studying t
  4. axation and can help us learn how to converse with different types of accounting research audiences.
