Deloitte Foundation Sponsors Thirty-Eighth
Annual Trueblood Seminars
Accounting Professors and Practitioners
Discuss the Latest Developments in Practice
Wilton, CT, May 1, 2003 - Nearly 60 accounting and auditing educators
from across the country recently participated in the Robert M. Trueblood
Seminars for Professors in Scottsdale, Arizona. These highly regarded seminars
fulfill an important mission-to encourage greater interaction between
accounting faculty and practicing professionals and to provide materials to
help professors capture the richness and complexity of practice in their
classrooms. The event sponsor, The Deloitte Foundation, recently renewed its
support with a $500,000 commitment to fund future programs.
"In today's rapidly changing and increasingly complex business world,
practitioners continue to face unique challenges. New issues arise frequently,
many without precedent, and their solutions require the technical knowledge of
the best minds in the profession," said Mark Chain, National Director of
Recruiting and Human Resources Management of Deloitte & Touche and
President of the Deloitte Foundation. "The Trueblood Seminars are designed
to help accounting faculty learn more about the current state of practice, and
provide a forum for professors and practitioners to discuss professional
issues, ask questions of each other, and share observations and knowledge that
ultimately will be brought back to the classroom."
The seminars center on more than twenty case studies that are developed by
Deloitte & Touche's Accounting Services group, and highlight current issues
in accounting and auditing. The cases are selected to offer professors a broad
overview of the most recent developments in practice. Each case presents a
complex issue that does not have a clear solution and tests the limits of
current theories, and practices in accounting and auditing. Deloitte &
Touche professionals introduce each case, and faculty and practitioners then
propose, and discuss possible solutions to the issues presented. Guest speakers
Robert Herz and Katherine Schipper of the Financial Accounting Standards Board
presented a standard setting update at this year's seminars.
The seminar content was designed by a group of faculty and a Deloitte &
Touche representative who serve on the American Accounting Association (AAA)
Trueblood Seminars Planning Committee. Professor George Plesko of the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology chaired the 2003 Committee. Other members
included Professors Joe Anthony of Michigan State University, Bala Dharan of
Rice University, Susan Scholz of the University of Kansas, Mohan Venkatachalam
of Duke University, and Larry Walther of the University of Texas at Arlington,
as well as Mark Chain, Partner, Deloitte & Touche.
"The Trueblood Seminars provide an invaluable opportunity for those of
us who teach accounting to learn from and interact with those who are on the
cutting edge of the accounting practice," said Professor Plesko.
