Outstanding Accounting Educator Award Winner

Katherine SchipperKatherine Schipper, University of Chicago, Eli B. and Harriet B. Williams Professor of Accounting and KPMG Peat Marwick Faculty Research Scholar has been chosen as a recipient of the Outstanding Accounting Educator Award. Katherine has made substantial contributions to accounting education through her research, her guidance of doctoral students, her role as editor of the Journal of Accounting Research, her leadership within the profession and at her university, her teaching and her mentoring of students and faculty. She has been an innovative and challenging teacher, both in curriculum development at the University of Chicago and in her service on the Accounting Education Change Commission. Katherine won the Outstanding Teacher Award at the Graduate School of Industrial Administration at Carnegie Mellon University and the McKinsey Award for the outstanding M.B.A. teacher at the University of Chicago. Her research has addressed important issues, and she has shaped the literature in accounting policy and earnings management. Her influence has gone beyond the academic sphere. Katherine has been a trusted advisor for senior officials at the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Financial Accounting Standards Board, and major accounting firms. She has provided counsel to the President and Provost of the University of Chicago as well as leadership within the Graduate School of Business. As editor of the Journal of Accounting Research, she has guided many authors from quasi-intelligible ramblings to tightly woven articles. As a mentor and colleague, she has guided Ph.D. students, critiqued colleagues’ papers, contributed to numerous colloquia and symposia, and provided counsel to students and faculty far and wide. She has served the American Accounting Association in many roles, including as a spokesperson in the U.S. and abroad, as a participant in numerous Doctoral Consortia, as Director of Research and as President. Katherine has great respect within the entire academic community for her tireless efforts and talent. Perhaps the greatest compliment is to say that so many have learned so much from her. Katherine Schipper is truly an Outstanding Accounting Educator.
