Student Manuscript Competition

CALL FOR PAPERS

Deloitte & Touche, USA, in association with the Ohio Region of the American Accounting Association, will again sponsor a student manuscript competition. This competition is open to all undergraduate and graduate accountancy students at any Ohio university or college. Cash prizes and plaques will be awarded to the winners at Friday night’s dinner during the 2006 Ohio Region meeting. Winners are encouraged to attend the dinner as guests of the AAA Ohio Region.

Categories and Eligibility:

This year there will be three categories of competition:

  • Undergraduate—open to all undergraduate students majoring in accounting at an Ohio institution
  • Graduate (masters' degree students)—open to all masters' students at an Ohio institution
  • Graduate (doctoral degree students)—open to all accounting doctoral students at an Ohio institution

Prizes:

  • $500 cash and plaque for the first place and $250 cash and plaque for the second place winners of the undergraduate and graduate (masters') student categories
  • Plaque for the winner of the graduate (doctoral degree students) category

Objectives of the Competition:

  • To encourage undergraduate accounting majors to engage in reading beyond their textbooks, critically examine an issue and enhance their writing skills
  • To encourage masters' and doctoral level students to research and to develop and justify their own conclusions about some frontier area of accounting

Topic:

  • Any topic related to accounting is acceptable.

Evaluation Criteria:

  • All papers will be blind reviewed and ranked on the following:
    • Content: 65 points—the significance of the issue covered, the strength of defense for selecting the issue, the strength of the analysis and merits of recommendations
    • Style: 35 points—the organization, clarity and grammatical accuracy of the manuscript
  • Co-authored papers will not be accepted.

Format:

  • Papers should be double spaced, using a 12 point font.
  • Papers should not exceed 10 pages for the undergraduate category and 20 pages for both graduate categories (not including footnotes and bibliography).
  • Papers should follow the guidelines and style of The Accounting Review.
  • Each manuscript should have a cover page that includes:
    • Title of the manuscript
    • The name of the author, university, mailing address, e-mail address and telephone number
    • The name of the faculty sponsor

Submission:

  • The manuscript should be submitted by the sponsoring faculty member (faculty may sponsor a maximum of three papers in any of the above categories).
  • Four copies of the manuscript should be submitted to:

  • All submissions must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2006.
