I created a macro for applying Microsoft Excel-97, to the typical accounting problems encountered by the students in an accounting principles course. The student is given the option of doing their homework on a microcomputer rather than a workbook while using a computer application that is in demand by industry. This macro provides the students with the all of the necessary forms and statements use in the course. After the student completes the problem the students prints the necessary pages and saves the problem using the chapter and problem number from the textbook as a reference. The macro can be used regardless of the textbook selected for the course. The macro is not completely automated therefore the student completes the forms in the way an accountant would. This was done purposely so the student would learn about the flow of accounting information from journalizing through preparing the income statement and completing the balance sheet.
Upon the completion of the accounting principles course the students are able to use their computer skills for all subsequent accounting courses. The use of microcomputers in all future accounting courses will better prepare the students for employment, which is one of the goals of higher education.
They are learning a skill which makes them more employable while building a reputation that the school is in step with industry.
