Title: Industry Field Trip - Nucor Steel; Scout Boats
Topic: Site visits to manufacturing plants; an integrative, multi-disciplinary learning experience
Coordinator:Mary Greenawalt, Francis Marion University

Description:
Here's your chance to learn more about production/operations/management/accounting in a field visit to Nucor Steel and Scout Boats. I've taken undergraduate and MBA students both these places previously for a fascinating learning experience.

The Scout Boats manufacturing facility tour lets us see the production of fiberglass fishing boats. Our visit with the controller will provide interesting details about how she designed an accounting system to fit the needs of this formerly small mom-and-pop operation.and then updated the system to handle the needs of this growing business.

At Nucor we will see both the cold mill and the beam mill, which provide examples of two different types of production processes and necessitate different accounting methods, job order and process costing. Individual headsets for plant tour participants enhance the experience. Along with the manufacturing tour, we will have the valuable opportunity to learn about management practices and accounting at Nucor from beam mill manager and the plant controller.

Note: 1. Registration is limited; sign up early to reserve your space. 2. Lunch is provided. 3. Participants should dress appropriately for an industrial environment and be prepared for walking. Recommended attire: casual clothing such as jeans; long sleeves, long pants, and good walking shoes.

Title: Web-Enhanced Teaching: Using WebCT in the Accounting Classroom
Topic: Use of Online Resources, Activities, and Exams
Presenter: Patricia Isaacs, Berea College

Description:
Since the Fall 2001 semester, I have used WebCT, an online course management tool, to provide online course information, assignments, and quizzes and exams for traditional accounting principles, intermediate accounting, and income tax classes. Syllabi and calendar information are available to students on demand. Writing assignments, Excel problems, and TurboTax assignments are submitted online. End-of-chapter quizzes and exams are given online, and students are able to view results immediately upon submitting their answers. Student response to the use of WebCT in these ways has been quite favorable. The workshop will demonstrate for participants the use of WebCT in my courses. Examples of syllabi, assignments, and exams will be given. Advantages and disadvantages of publisher ePacks will be explored. Student comments concerning the use of WebCT will be shared as well.

Title: The First Accounting Course (for MBAs): A Total Redesign
Presenter: Ronald J. Huefner, State University of New York at Buffalo

Description:
This seminar will introduce you to a totally different way of organizing and teaching the first accounting course - a "models" approach. Choice of specific models to be covered will depend on the focus of the course, the length of the course, and its role in the curriculum. Among the models to be discussed are:

  • Cash Flow Model
  • Discounted Cash Flow Model
  • Cash Income Model
  • Accrual Income Model
  • Working Capital Model

For each, specific topics covered will be described. Cases and assignments that support this approach will also be covered. Though this approach precedes the Albrecht-Sack Report, I believe it is entirely consistent with the recommendations of that report, and is a tested example of how we can restructure accounting education.

By the end of this seminar, you will have a new view of how the first accounting course can be successfully offered. While I have taught this approach to MBAs, I believe it can be successfully delivered to undergraduates as well.
