May 3 - 5, 2001

Assessing Student Competency Performance

Abstract:
This workshop will introduce practical techniques for assessing student performance of competencies using accounting coursework. Participants will: (1) learn about the importance of establishing targets for levels of student competency performance, (2) practice assessing levels of actual accounting student coursework performance, and (3) learn how to use assessment results to improve their courses and educational programs. The techniques introduced in this session are based on guidance in the forthcoming AICPA curriculum evaluation tools (part of the AICPA Core Competency Framework for Entry Into the Accounting Profession).

Background:
Legislators, accrediting organizations, and other stakeholders increasingly demand that educators assess student educational outcomes. Unfortunately, few accounting educators are adequately trained in assessment methods. In addition, many assessment activities fail to provide meaningful information to educators about how they might improve their educational courses and programs. The AICPA's curriculum evaluation tools are designed to provide accounting educators with resources to help them conduct assessments and use the findings to improve their educational strategies.

Statement of Purpose:
The purpose of the workshop is to provide accounting educators with practical tools that they can use to assess student competency performance and to use the assessment findings for continuous improvement.

Targeted Audience:
This workshop will be useful to faculty, administrators, and curriculum or assessment committee members. The techniques learned in the session apply to both course-level and program-level assessment.

How the Session Will Be Conducted:
This session will be highly interactive. Participants will practice conducting assessments of student competency performance and will generate ideas for using the techniques from the workshop in their own courses and programs.
