Title:
Teaching and Assessing Professional Competencies in Managerial and Cost Accounting
Presenter: Susan K. Wolcott, PhD, WolcottLynch Associates
Abstract: This workshop will demonstrate how to use assignments to help students learn managerial and cost accounting, while simultaneously developing their competencies in areas such as strategic thinking, decision modeling, communication, teamwork, risk analysis, resource management, and life-long learning. Participants will also learn how to use coursework assignments to reliably assess student competencies for course and program purposes. The workshop will use examples from managerial and cost accounting courses and provide assignment and assessment materials that professors can use in their own courses.

A Short Practice Case for a First (and Only?) Course in Auditing
Presenter: Donald A. Schwartz, CPA, J.D., National University
Abstract: Faced with the choice of having either “all theory, no hands-on” or adopting an extremely comprehensive practice case that might require a separate auditing lab course, the presenter chose the middle ground by developing a “short and simple” practice case–complete with invoices and other documents–for use in the first auditing course. In this hour-long workshop, the presenter demonstrates the auditing procedures and workpaper documentation that students complete on Excel templates. Attendees will receive a complimentary copy, which in turn can be copied for each student.
