Session 1: Excel Foundations for Accounting Educators: Formulas, Functions, and Visualizations
Excel remains one of the most widely used tools in accounting and business, making spreadsheet proficiency an essential skill for students entering the profession. This hands-on workshop is designed for accounting educators who want to strengthen their own Excel skills while exploring effective ways to integrate Excel into their courses. Participants will work through foundational Excel concepts, including formulas, functions, relative and absolute references, data organization, and formatting techniques commonly used in accounting. The session will also introduce data visualization principles and the creation of charts and graphs in Excel that help transform data into meaningful insights. Attendees will leave with practical examples, classroom-ready exercises, and strategies for helping students build confidence with Excel in both academic and professional settings.

Session 2: From Formulas to Insights: Advanced Excel, AI, and Power BI for Accounting Education
As accounting professionals increasingly rely on data analytics and business intelligence tools to support decision-making, educators must prepare students to move beyond basic spreadsheet skills. In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore advanced Excel capabilities, including logical functions, lookup functions, PivotTables, and data analysis techniques commonly used in accounting and finance. The session will also demonstrate how artificial intelligence can enhance productivity by assisting with formula creation, troubleshooting, spreadsheet analysis, and instructional design. Participants will then learn how to connect Excel datasets to Power BI and create interactive dashboards that transform raw data into actionable business insights. Attendees will leave with practical examples, teaching resources, and ideas for integrating analytics and emerging technologies into accounting curricula.

Prerequisites: Session 1: Please make sure you have Microsoft Excel downloaded and ready to use before the session. The preferred version is Microsoft Excel through Microsoft 365/Office 365.
You may use either Excel for Windows/PC or Excel for Mac. Most activities will work in both versions, although some steps, menus, or shortcuts may differ. PC/Mac differences will be identified where needed.
For the best experience, please use the downloaded desktop version of Excel rather than the web/browser version.
Session 2 prerequisite is session 1.
