The 2018 Yuji Ijiri Lecture on Foundations of Accounting

Presented by Professor Shizuki Saito, Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo

The inaugural Yuji Ijiri Lecture on Foundations of Accounting was given on September 4, 2018 at the 77th Annual Conference of the Japan Accounting Association by Professor Shizuki Saito. Professor Saito is Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo. He received his BA from Musashi and Ph.D. from Tokyo Universities both in Economics. As a graduate student, he studied under the guidance of Yuji Ijiri while the latter was a visiting professor from 1967 to 1968. He was on the Faculty of Economics at Musashi, Tokyo and Meji Gakuin Universities until he retired in 2012. He spent 27 years at Tokyo and served as Dean for two years. He was President of the Japan Accounting Association from 2006 to 2009 as well as the first chairman of the ASBJ, a Japanese equivalent to the US FASB from 2001 to 2007. As a leading scholar on foundational issues of accounting measurement, he has published six single-authored books and more than hundred scholarly papers in Japanese, while his research appears in the Journal of Accounting, Economics, and Law: A Convivium (CONVIVIUM), Accounting Historians Journal, Japanese Accounting Review etc.
