Charge
Carry out all activities necessary to screen candidates for the Competitive Manuscript Award. Specifically:
- Actively seek and submit nominations by sending emails to junior scholars and their advisors calling their attention to the deadline and urging them to submit.
- Review and evaluate nominations for the award based on the award criteria, observing subject matter interest, depth of research, contribution to knowledge, and organization of subject matter, with a focus on identifying those papers that have a reasonable chance of ultimately being publishable in The Accounting Review, and among those, the highest-quality and most deserving of being showcased by this important award.
- The Board of Directors Liaison may attend committee meetings but may not vote in the committee's deliberations.
- Select up to six nominees to be forwarded to the Competitive Manuscript Award Selection Committee.
- The Chair must submit at least one report per year to the Board of Directors. This report should include accomplishments and suggested modifications and should be sent to the AAA President, the Committee's Board of Directors Liaison, and Professional Staff Liaison, Barbara Gutierrez at barbara.gutierrez@aaahq.org
- If the Chair has any questions about the charge or responsibilities of this committee, they should contact the Chief Executive Officer, the President, or the Committee's Board of Directors Liaison.
Committee Composition/Required Knowledge and Expertise/Conflict of Interest Rules
- Committee members plus a voting Chair are appointed annually prior to the Annual Meeting by the Council Committee on Awards Committee.
- The committee consists of five or six members, including a voting Chair.
- Care should be taken that the Committee members have diversity regarding research areas and methods. Must have evidence of conducting and reviewing research of a similar rigor to papers published in The Accounting Review (as evidenced by having both published in and reviewed for top-tier journals such as TAR, JAR, JAE, RAST, CAR, MS, AOS).
- All conflict-of-interest rules applicable to The Accounting Review also apply to both the Screening and Selection Committee members. Conflicts are managed at the discretion of the Chair (either by replacing the committee member or recusing the committee member from voting on the paper for which they have a conflict).
