Mapping a Century of Accounting Literature using Text Mining: A Collaboration Opportunity for Accounting Faculty and Doctoral Students

In this interactive webinar, we will discuss our text mining research projects, involve attendees in the topic naming process, and offer research collaboration opportunities for accounting faculty and doctoral students. As background work, In December 2021, we aggregated 102,707 references from 126 accounting journals for 95 years (1926-2021). After preprocessing and cleaning the textual data, we generated a corpus of 66,657 references covering a century-long history of accounting journals. Through the textual analyses of the abstracts, we identified 26 major topics.

The overall goal of this project is to publish an interactive Tableau Dashboard for the 26 major research topics and the subtopics of each of these 26 topics by the end of 2022. Through the collaborations we establish, we would like to make this resource available to the stakeholders of accounting research within a year.

Learning Objective(s):
1. To collaborate on potential research projects by proposing research ideas for text-mining assisted systematic reviews using the curated textual data.
2. To learn and participate in the naming process of the major research topics in accounting.
3. To brainstorm on potential manuscript ideas using this curated data set of 66,567 references.
