Practical Strategies for Teaching Large-Enrollment Classes in Person or Online

Teaching large-enrollment classes can be challenging. Logistical issues like taking attendance, grading, interacting with students, and giving frequent feedback can seem insurmountable. Many instructors choose to rely solely on lectures to address these issues. The lecturer and student interact relatively little in a large, lecture-based classroom, which makes the student feel alone and nameless. Students are also more likely to express low satisfaction levels on evaluations in big, lecture-based classrooms. Large online sections, where it is even easier for students to remain anonymous and disengaged, exacerbate these problems.

The panelists will discuss how they handle the challenges that come with instructing large sections. Each of the panelists has taught large-enrollment classes both in-person and/or online. The panelists' suggestions for both delivery modes are practical, class-tested strategies that can be adapted to any school.
