WORKSHOP 1: An Original Dataset and Exercises in Audit Analytics: Using Tableau

Description: In this workshop, you will be introduced to Tableau and use our original dataset to work through a series of exercises. In the final exercise, you will use the skills you have learned to find a possible fraud within the data.

Presenters:
Cindy Durtschi is Associate Professor and Dr. Barry Jay Epstein Faculty Fellow at DePaul University.  Her area of specialization is forensic accounting.  In particular, she has focused much of her research and writing on learning how to help auditors better detect fraud.  To this end, she has created and published several forensic accounting cases using the problem-based learning methodology (PBL) in which students must detect and investigate fraud within the books of a firm.  She received the 2006 American Accounting Association Innovation in Audit Education Award for her published PBL case in forensic accounting, “The Tallahassee BeanCounters:  A Problem-Based Learning Case in Forensic Auditing.”   Dr. Durtschi’s work appears in Journal of Accounting ResearchJournal of Accounting, Auditing and FinanceJournal of Forensic AccountingIssues in Accounting Education as well as other accounting and finance journals.

Tawei (David) Wang is an Assistant Professor in the School of Accountancy and MIS at DePaul University. He received his Ph.D. in Management Information Systems from KrannertGraduate School of Management, Purdue University in 2009. He has been developing analytics related curriculum for several years and now teaches audit analytics and data mining for the MS in Audit and Advisory program. He was invited by conferences and universities to discuss audit analytics related issues. He also co-authored a paper discussing issues of audit analytics identified by an experienced practitioner, Robert Cuthbertson from CaseWare IDEA, Inc. His research interests are IT management and information security management. His papers have appeared in leading academic journals, including Information Systems Research, Decision Support Systems, European Journal of Information Systems, Information and Management, Information Systems Journal, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Information Systems, among others. He currently serves on the AAA Midwest Region Executive Committee and the editorial boards of International Journal of Accounting Information Systems, Journal of Emerging Technologies in Accounting, and Journal of Information systems.
