Practical Guidelines for Designing Your Data Analytics Course/Curricula

Gail Hoover King earned her doctorate from the Northern Illinois University College of Business in Business Education focusing on accounting and finance with a minor in instructional technology. At Washburn University, she has developed the Data Analytics course for the School of Business Core Curriculum and chairs the committee developing the data analytics concentration.  Before joining the faculty at Washburn University, she was a tenured Accounting Professor at Purdue University Northwest prior to this at Rockhurst University.

Her scholarship focuses on student learning, pedagogical innovation, and assessment.  She has won multiple awards including 2017 Jim Bulloch Award for Innovations in Management Accounting Education sponsored by the IMA, 2017 Mark Chain Innovation in Graduate Teaching Award from the AICPA/Federation of Schools of Accountancy, and 2016 Bea Sanders/AICPA Innovation in Teaching Award Honorable Mention.  In 2017 she received the 2017 National Association of State Board of Accountancy Accounting Education Research Grant. Recently, she was recognized for her service to the American Accounting Association Teaching Learning and Curriculum Section with the 2019 Hall of Honors Award.

Currently, she sits on the American Accounting Association’s Education Committee, the IMA Kansas City Chapter Board of Directors and the Support KC Board of Directors and Audit Committee.   Gail past chair of the Conference on Teaching and Learning Accounting and serves on the Colloquium Program Committee of the Teaching Learning and Curriculum Section.   She also served as a Commissioner for the Pathways Commission on the Future of Accounting Education.  In practice, she was a financial accountant in the oil and gas industry, a cost accountant and assistant financial analyst for a manufacturing company, and a consultant for nonprofit organizations.

Chris is a partner in KPMG’s Audit Practice with broad financial reporting experience, including an appointment at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and audit and professional practice services at KPMG LLP. Chris serves public companies throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. As the lead audit partner on companies registered with the SEC, Chris is a key resource to registrants’ audit committees and management on the application of U.S. GAAP and internal control over financial reporting. Chris has demonstrated experience in providing expert guidance on the implementation of the FASB’s new accounting standards, emerging issues, and complex transactions.

In KPMG’s Department of Professional Practice, Chris advised audit engagement teams in resolving complex accounting and auditing issues, focusing primarily on revenue recognition, consolidations, financial assets, business combinations, leasing, long-lived assets and contingencies.

Chris is a former Professional Accounting Fellow in the Office of the Chief Accountant at the SEC. While at the SEC, Chris consulted with registrants on accounting and reporting matters, participated in the development of the SEC’s rule proposals, and served as a key resource for staff in the Divisions of Corporation Finance, Investment Management and Enforcement related to the resolution of technical accounting matters. In addition, he led and participated in OCA staff reviews of draft FASB and IASB accounting standards. He also served as the leader of the leasing topic team in the Office of the Chief Accountant.
Chris has spoken to numerous audiences, including presenting emerging revenue recognition and consolidations practice issues at the December 2015 AICPA National Conference on Current SEC and PCAOB Developments.
