John F. Simon, Jr. Visual Artist and Author John F. Simon, Jr. was one of the pioneers in the development of Software Art and is renowned in this area for articulating the use of code in digital and multimedia works since the mid-1980s. His session will introduce his methods of mindful drawing. He will ask participants to put these ideas into action using pencil and paper. The hands-on activities will put us in touch with our basic instincts to learn by exploring, our joy in spontaneously inventing, and noticing how we judge our results. John then leads a group discussion exploring non-verbal learning and what these simple drawings reveal about ourselves. John F. Simon Jr has a MFA degree, School of Visual Arts in Manhattan & Masters degree in Earth and Planetary Sciences, Washington University in St. Louis. . He is a multimedia artist and Software Art pioneer whose work and installations are found in the permanent collections of The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, among others. In 2011, he collaborated with Icelandic singer Björk to write an app for her album, Biophilia. Simon's newest publication, "Drawing Your Own Path: 33 Practices at the Crossroads of Art and Meditation" will be released in November, 2016, by Parallax Press. Simon grew up in central Louisiana and currently lives and works in Sugar Loaf, New York. Dan Stone PhD Gatton Endowed Chair Dan N. Stone is a Gatton Endowed Chair at the University of Kentucky, where he holds appointments in the Von Allmen School of Accountancy and the Honors Program. Dan’s session will be based on his recent research investigating mindfulness, language, and, knowledge practices among scholars and professionals. Dan is also the Director of the TW Lewis Scholars’ Program in the Honors Program, and, the Director of Graduate Studies, and of the PhD program, for the Von Allmen School of Accountancy. His joint PhD degree is in accounting and information technology from the University of Texas at Austin. He has published over 40 academic works and is the former senior editor of the Journal of Information Systems. Cassy Budd Teaching Professor Cassy Budd has more than 14 years of experience teaching accounting at the at USU and at BYU. Cassy’s sessions will explore daily bias and how to recognize its effect on our interactions with students and colleagues. She will also lead sessions on how our teaching perspective and understanding our strengths and weaknesses can be used to develop a personal teaching brand. Cassy Budd is 2016-2018 TLC Chair of Academics. She holds a MAcc in Taxation & Personal Financial Planning, Utah State University, 2002. She has more than 10 years of experience in public accounting with PricewaterhouseCoopers as an Audit Manager and Director of Human Resources. Recently while on professional leave, she spent 7 months working with pre-IPO companies helping them get ready for the big stage. She has won numerous teaching awards and has been a national speaker for the Conference on Teaching and Learning Accounting. K. Rebecca Runyon, PhD K. Rebecca Runyon is a Senior Assessment Specialist on the Learning Design team for Pearson Higher Education Global Technology Products. Rebecca’s previous experience includes serving as a higher education academic program, student affairs, and general education student learning and developmental outcomes assessment consultant and conducting higher education and K-12 evaluation, measurement, and psychometric research. She earned her PhD in Assessment and Measurement and her MA in Cognitive Psychology from James Madison University. Her research has been published in the International Journal of Testing, Educational Assessment, Research & Practice in Assessment and presented at AERA, NCME, NERA, and APS. Erin Scully, MA Erin Scully is a Senior Learning Designer on Pearson Higher Education’s Learning and Experience Design team. Erin’s diverse Higher Ed experience includes editorial, sales, and market development work concentrated in math and science. Erin received her MA in Instructional Technology and Media from Teachers College, Columbia University, where she focused on adult learning and the use of game mechanics in educational design. |
