In Memoriam: an ATA Founding Member
Edward Jay Schnee
(November 22, 1946 – December 20, 2025)

We share the news that Dr. Ed Schnee passed away peacefully on December 20, 2025, at the age of 79. He was a resident of Vestavia Hills, Alabama, and native of New York City, NY.
Ed was the Hugh Culverhouse Professor of Accounting at the Culverhouse School of Accountancy at The University of Alabama from 1982 to 2022, after stints at the University of Kentucky and the University of South Carolina. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration degree from City College of New York and his MBA and doctorate from Michigan State University. He devoted the majority of his career to teaching tax accounting to seniors and master’s students.
He was a founding member of the American Taxation Association (ATA) Section and served in many capacities for the organization, including President and Editor of the section’s Journal of Legal Tax Research. Ed received many awards in recognition of his contributions, including the ATA’s Outstanding Tax Educator Award (2011) and the ATA Outstanding Service Award (2004).
