2024 Financial Accounting and Reporting Section Midyear Meeting January 19-20, 2024 We are pleased to announce that the 2024 Midyear Meeting of the Financial Accounting and Reporting Section (FARS) will be held at the Hilton Denver City in Denver, Colorado, January 19-20, 2024, with a small virtual component on Monday, January 22, 2024. MORE INFORMATION HERE A Letter from Our Section President Kristi Rennekamp 2023-2024 FARS Section President Dear FARS Members and Visitors, The Financial Accounting and Reporting Section was created in 1993 with 49 members as a provisional section of the AAA. The section has since grown to around 1,500 members from around the world! As we head into our 30th year, this is truly an exciting time to be involved with FARS. In just the past few years, the section has launched initiatives with a focus on (1) integrating research and practice, (2) mentoring junior faculty, and (3) prioritizing diversity and inclusion. This year we will continue these initiatives and look for ways to expand them further in order to best serve our section members. The mission of FARS is enduring, and calls for us “to give greater attention to financial accounting and reporting, and to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of education, research, and professional practice by: (1) disseminating and evaluating teaching methods and materials; (2) encouraging, facilitating, and publicizing research interests and projects; and (3) creating opportunities for interchange and cooperation between academics and practitioners.” Continue Reading Introducing the FARS Mentoring Program – Apply Today! We are excited to announce the launch of the new FARS Mentoring Program, which will support junior faculty in the field of accounting during the critical early years of their academic careers. The program will connect junior faculty to tenured faculty from other universities in a structured setting with the goal to facilitate professional growth and provide personalized guidance in navigating challenges and opportunities. The one-year pilot program will begin in January 2024 with a kick-off session at the FARS midyear meeting (in-person attendance is encouraged but not required). The program will continue through the end of the calendar year with regular virtual meetings between the mentor and mentee, at least one per quarter but no more than one per month, and no more than one hour per meeting. Travel scholarships for the midyear meeting may be available to qualifying participants. Mentees are responsible for organizing the virtual meetings and communicating which topics they would like to discuss. Some examples might include: Tips for coming up with research ideas Feedback on the specific research ideas the mentee has identified Guidance on responding to comments received in an editor’s letter or referee report High-level feedback on one of the mentee’s research papers Goals and plans for making progress toward tenure What the mentee can do to gain visibility in the field and build a network Teaching challenges and advice Work-life balance Career mobility opportunities or changes in institutions To get involved, click on the appropriate link below: MENTEES: The program is open to all FARS members who have completed a Ph.D. but are not tenured faculty.
