FARS Emerging Scholar Award

The Financial Accounting and Reporting Section (FARS) Emerging Scholar Award is conferred annually and recognizes an early-career researcher with an exemplary body of research in financial reporting. The award carries with it a $1,500 cash prize and an engraved plaque, to be awarded during the January Midyear Meeting following the nomination deadline.

Evaluation Process

Nominations will be reviewed by the Emerging Scholar Award Committee, and decisions will be based on:

  • Originality and significance of the nominee’s research.
  • Methodological rigor and scholarly impact.
  • Contributions to advancing the understanding and practice of financial reporting.
  • Potential for stimulating future benefits to financial reporting research

Eligibility

Eligible recipients should be within six years of receiving their doctoral degree as of the nomination deadline. For example, for the September 15, 2025, nomination deadline, candidates must have earned their PhD after September 1, 2019, and any research published or forthcoming by the nomination deadline will be considered.

In addition, the candidate must be a member of the Financial Accounting and Reporting Section of the AAA at the time of the award.

Award Committee

The Emerging Scholar Award Committee consists of five to seven members appointed annually by the FARS President. The term of service for committee members is one year. The chair of the committee is responsible for accepting nominations, organizing the evaluation of the submitted materials, and recommending a recipient to the FARS Steering Board with a brief report outlining the evaluation process and the rationale for the recommendation.

Submission Instructions and Materials

Nomination materials should include:

  • A brief cover letter outlining the case for the nominee.
  • A current CV for the nominee, including status information on any working papers.
  • PDF copies of all papers to be considered as part of the case.

Letters of support for the nomination are welcome but not required. Self-nominations are allowed and encouraged.

Nominations and questions should be directed to the Chair of the Emerging Scholar Award Committee, Darren Roulstone, at roulstone.1@osu.edu.

Submissions are due by September 15th, annually.

President's Letter

FARS President

Dear FARS Section Members,

Welcome to the 2025–2026 academic year! I am excited to serve as your Section President and to continue the strong tradition of scholarship and community that makes FARS such a special home within the AAA.

I would like to thank John Jiang for his thoughtful leadership this past year. Under his guidance, the section had a successful year filled with high-quality research presentations, thoughtful discussions, and meaningful connections. The Annual Meeting last month was also a great success, with 475 submissions. I am grateful to all of you who contributed by presenting, reviewing, moderating, or attending.

Looking ahead, I am pleased to share that our 2025–2026 committees are already staffed and ready to get to work. Thank you to those of you who volunteered to serve—your time and effort are critical to advancing the section’s mission.
