Academic Writing Workshop: Thursday Add-on Session at the 2017 ATA Mid-Year Meeting
Led by a professional writing consultant with years of experience helping accounting, finance, and economics researchers at leading institutions, this 3-hour intensive, hands-on seminar is designed for academics who would like improve the efficiency and efficacy of their writing.
Participants will bring a working draft to the workshop and leave with a revised introduction.
The format will be a combination of:
Short lectures by topic: | What is at stake in the first 2 pages of an academic journal submission? How do you message your study’s contribution? How can you position your paper to affect who journal editors select as reviewers? |

Modeling writing techniques: | Demonstration of a paragraph-by-paragraph planning technique for an academic papers’ introductory section |

Active learning exercises: | Revising your working paper introduction and pitching it to others |
Cost: $250. Limited to 20 participants.

• Workshop materials, an afternoon break, and two electronic resources:
Online courses at ClearWriter (www.clearwriter.com): each participant will receive access to the full site, including the self-study modules for review and further exploration.
• ClearEdits software (an add-in to Microsoft Word): each participant will receive proprietary PC-based software to check drafts for common writing issues.
