Introductions, Reviews, and Discussions: A How-To Guide for Early-Career Academics
Developing strong scholarly skills early in an academic career is critical for research success and professional engagement. This webinar is designed for doctoral students and early-career accounting scholars and focuses on three core academic skills: drafting effective manuscript introductions, writing constructive journal reviews, and delivering high-quality conference discussions. The session will feature focused mini-presentations grounded in published guidance from Issues in Accounting Education. Mike Wilkins will present a structured framework for writing introductions, emphasizing how to clearly communicate the research question, motivate the study, and position its contribution. Derek Oler and Matt Hart will draw on their work to provide practical guidance on writing journal reviews and preparing conference discussions. Their session will highlight the role of reviewers and discussants in providing constructive feedback, as well as the process of preparing, presenting, and following up on scholarly evaluations. Together, the session provides a practical, step-by-step guide to developing essential academic skills that support successful research, publication, and engagement in the accounting research community. The webinar is open to all doctoral students and early-career scholars, regardless of AAA membership.
