Tools for Analysis and Transparency in Accounting

This presentation will demonstrate the use of the free tools available from the Truth in Accounting (TIA) Project at the University of Denver. This includes Data-Z.org, a data aggregation website that has over 700 data sets available for use to customize charts and graphs. These can be used as a great segway into data analysis for any accounting course. With the changes to the CPA exam coming in 2024, these easy to customize charts allow students to find a data set that interests them, which in turn increases students' desire to learn more about data.

TIA’s latest effort is direct involvement in implementing Extensible Business Reporting Language – XBRL - in governmental reporting. A brief demonstration will be provided on how taxonomy language is developed. This will then be used to compare the ease of using public SEC reports as compared to the research needed to compare governmental data.

Participants will leave with multiple free tools for introducing students to the concepts needed for CPA Evolution as well as data modernization.

Learning Objective(s): To learn about the free tools available from the Truth in Accounting Project at the University of Denver.
