*Improv Tools for the Sage on the Stage (How The Second City changed my class)

Speaker: Tim West, Northern Illinois University

Summary: In 2009, Professor West was failing to connect with the students in his graduate class. In fact, he questioned whether he was simply burned out or his career was ending. After almost 20 years of successful teaching, he questioned what could be done to improve his performance and improve student engagement. He wanted students to think creatively, rely on each other and value their classes. In essence, he wanted them to care – about themselves, each other and Northern Illinois University. Out of desperation, he decided to call the Harvard of Imrov Comedy – The Second City. The Second City alumni are a who’s who of comedy and include Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner and John Belushi. Professor West’s workshop will provide hands-on demonstrations of how to use improve tools in your classes. The educational goals: (1) increase classroom engagement, (2) promote an “I’ve got your back” mentality, and (3) encourage critical thinking. Attendees will walk away with a dozen tools and techniques they can use immediately in their classes.
