Integrating ESG into the Curriculum

This webinar explores two creative approaches to integrating sustainability into accounting education, anchored around different organizing frameworks. One speaker shares insights from designing a brand- new course that is sustainability-inclusive, while the other demonstrates how existing assignments can be refreshed as sustainability-focused, with a view to deepening student engagement and practicing professionalism. The session provides fresh ideas and practical strategies for faculty, whether starting from scratch or renovating with purpose.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Understand how a pyramid framework can be used to move students to ESG literacy. We will look at how a “building blocks” approach can simplify the perplexing maze of acronyms representing sustainability organizations, tools, frameworks, and standards.
  2. Explore the role of the accounting profession in ESG reporting and assurance. We will consider ways to help accounting students recognize the overlap between traditional accounting roles and developing roles in sustainability reporting and assurance.
  3. Understand how sustainability pedagogy can be applied to existing course activities. We will share practical ways to redesign accounting assignments using sustainability-focused learning theories to foster critical thinking and real-world application.
  4. Explore human-AI collaboration to enhance sustainability learning in accounting. We will consider how combining human judgment with AI tools can deepen engagement with sustainability and encourage the practice of professional skepticism.
