Scott Wiley provides the executive vision for one of the nation’s top accounting associations. He leads a team of 40+ professionals that create and deliver innovative advocacy, education and business solutions for 85,000 CPAs and accounting professionals working in businesses of every size and sector across Ohio.

Since 2013, Wiley has repositioned the association to deliver greater member value in a fast-moving business environment. He has refocused staff resources, products and services and in 2016, launched a new mission, vision and brand. It reflects OSCPA’s commitment to advance and diversify the accounting profession and support members as Ohio’s top strategic financial advisors.

He sets the association’s bold annual advocacy agenda, collaborating with government and CPA leaders to advance tax and regulatory changes that benefit Ohio’s economy and improve its business environment.

Influencing the national policy agenda for the accounting profession is a top priority for Wiley, who represents The Ohio Society of CPAs and the national association community on Capitol Hill. He does this through his active participation with the CPA Society State Executives Association and as Immediate Past Chair of ASAE, the American Society of Association Executives.

The Ohio Society of CPAs is recognized as a key leader in evolving CPA continuing education. Ohio was the first state CPA association to launch a successful online learning platform and Ohio was the first state to approve CPA continuing education credit for nano learning.

This strategic move emphasizes that learning formats must be flexible and evolve to meet the needs of a new generation of professionals. Wiley’s efforts earned him a place on The American Institute of CPAs Future of Learning Task Force in 2013.

Ann C. Dzuranin, Northern Illinois University

Data and Analytics: Curriculum Innovation to Meet Employer Needs

Dr. Ann C. Dzuranin is the Dean’s Distinguished Professor of Analytics in Accounting at Northern Illinois University. She earned her B.S. from Fairleigh Dickinson University, her MBA from New York University, and her Ph.D. from the University of South Florida. Ann is a CPA (NJ) and has 15 years of experience in both public and corporate accounting.

Dr. Dzuranin is interested in behavioral research in managerial decision-making, incentive compensation, and accounting information systems. Specifically, she is interested management accounting decision making and the ways in which accounting information systems interact with those decisions. Her research has been published in Issues in Accounting Education, Journal of Information Systems, Journal of Business Ethics, Management Accounting Quarterly, and Journal of Corporate Accounting and Finance.

Dr. Dzuranin’s work in data analytics curriculum development has resulted in invitations to present on the topic of Data Analytics and Accounting at both academic and professional conferences. Her presentations have reached over 1,500 people in the last 15 months with more than 40 universities requesting additional information regarding NIU’s approach to incorporating data analytics into the curriculum.

Debra Fisher, Ohio Department of Taxation

Debra began her career with the Department of Taxation in March 2014 as a Tax Commissioner Agent I in the Taxpayer Services Division. She became a Tax Examiner in the Taxpayer Services Division in February 2015. Debra was promoted to Tax Examiner Manager in the Taxpayer Services Division in November 2017. In October of 2018, Debra transferred to the Individual and School District Income Tax Division as a Tax Examiner Manager. Debra earned her bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from The Ohio State University.

Jennifer McFarland, Ohio Department of Taxation

Tips and Takes on Ohio Taxes: Insider Views

Jennifer is the Administrator of the Business Tax Division for the Ohio Department of Taxation. In this position, she is responsible for overseeing the operations of several Ohio taxes, including municipal net profit, commercial activity, financial institutions, petroleum activity, resort area gross receipts, sales, use, and wireless 911. Previously, Jennifer was the Administrator of the Internal Audit Division for the Department of Taxation. As Administrator of the Internal Division, she was responsible for independently evaluating and examining the internal control processes of the Department of Taxation. Prior to becoming an Administrator, Jennifer served in various management roles throughout the Department. Jennifer graduated from The University of Akron in Akron, Ohio with a Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting and earned her J.D. and LL.M. in Taxation from Capital University Law School in Columbus, Ohio.

Ryan M. Sabol, Esq., Ohio Department of Taxation

Tips and Takes on Ohio Taxes: Insider Views

Ryan Sabol is an attorney with the Ohio Department of Taxation who has served as a hearing officer with the Tax Appeals Division since April 2018. Prior to joining the Department, Ryan earned his law degree from Ohio Northern University’s Pettit College of Law and his Master of Laws in Taxation (LL.M.) degree with honors from Capital University Law School. Ryan’s current duties include conducting administrative hearings within the department and issuing the Tax Commissioner’s final determinations in Sales and Use Tax matters.

Marc A. Rubin, AAA President, Miami University of Ohio, Farmer School of Business

Bold Transformations Toward a Prosperous Society

Marc Rubin is the Dean and Mitchell P. Rales Chair in Business Leadership of the Farmer School of Business and Professor of Accountancy. He served as the chair of the accountancy department at FSB from 2003 to 2017. He previously was on the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He earned a B.S. in accounting from Miami University, a M.A.S. from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas and is a CPA and has experience with a national accounting firm.

Marc has won teaching awards at both Miami University and the University of North Carolina. His research interests are in the area of governmental accounting and auditing and he has published in a number of leading journals including The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, and Research in Government & Nonprofit Accounting. Marc also has authored research reports for the Financial Accounting Foundation and Governmental Accounting Standards Board. Marc currently is a member of the editorial board of Issues in Accounting Education and has served on a number of other editorial boards and as a reviewer for many journals and conferences.

Marc is the president of the American Accounting Association. He previously served in many capacities including as an officer in both the Government and Nonprofit Section and the Accounting Program Leaders Group, chair of the Membership Advisory Committee and co-chair of the 2013 annual meeting. Marc has also served on various committees of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
