Call for Nominations for AAA Board of Directors
3-Year Terms Begin August 2026

Nominations are now being accepted for the following four positions:

President-Elect
Vice President-Education
Director-Focusing on International
Director-Focusing on Membership

  • Each year the Board of Directors (BOD) develops a Call for Nominations for Board positions to be filled in that year’s election.
  • For each position on the ballot, the Call for Nominations includes the roles and responsibilities for the position and guidance on key interests and capabilities based on the Board's analysis of current projects, including ongoing Board positions and mission-related initiatives.
  • Student Members, in accordance with the Association Bylaws, may not hold an elected or appointed office.
  • All members are encouraged to provide qualified nominations based on the roles and responsibilities and key interests and capabilities for the Board position. Members submit nominations using the brief Nominations Form (see below) by Sunday, August 31, 2025 at 11:59 pm Eastern.
  • The AAA Nominations Committee (seven members comprising the two most-recent AAA past-presidents, and five at-large members who are elected by Council from a slate of non-Council members nominated by AAA members) and the Council Ballot Committee (all of Council, excluding the Board of Directors) receive and review all qualified nominations for their allocated Board positions in that year, thoroughly assess the match of each nominee with the expertise required for each position (based on roles and responsibilities and key interests and capabilities), and place at least two candidates on the slate.
  • Final selections among the candidates on the slate will be determined by a vote of the membership in early 2026.
  • New Board members take office at the conclusion of the Annual Meeting in August 2026.

President-Elect

Roles and Responsibilities for the position:


During their three-year term, the President-Elect serves for one year in that role (2026-2027), then for one year as President (2027-2028), followed by one year as Past President (2028-2029).

Over the course of their three-year term, the individual attends Board Meetings, Council Meetings, and Management Team Meetings. The individual also attends and/or presents periodically at Segment Meetings and meetings beyond the AAA.

The President-Elect is a key member of the AAA's leadership team, playing a major role in supporting ongoing strategic initiatives and further developing the AAA's strategy.  Specifically, the President-Elect participates as a leader on the Board of Directors and serves as a member of the Management Team, the Finance Committee, and as an ex-officio nonvoting member of the Governance Committee.

Once President, responsibilities focus on leading the Management Team's and Board’s discussions of the strategic direction of the Association. The President chairs the Board of Directors and presides at the Annual Meeting and Business Meeting of the Association. The President communicates to the membership on issues of interest. The President represents the AAA to other domestic and international professional and educational accounting associations. The President serves as Board of Director Liaison for the Doctoral Consortium, New Faculty, and Trueblood Seminars Committees, and other committees as requested, and co-hosts two Global Gathering meetings annually.

The Past President serves as a member of the Management Team, the Nominations Committee, the Finance Committee and other committees as requested, and serves as Board of Director Liaison for the Lifetime Service Award Committee. The Past President assists the President and President-Elect in their efforts to set the Association's strategy and continues to sustain strategic initiatives of the Association and provide continuity and cohesion on the Board of Directors.

 

 

 

Guidance from the Board of Directors on key interests
and capabilities for the position:

  • Candidates should embrace the American Accounting Association’s vision to be Thought Leaders in Accounting. The President-Elect will support the continued implementation of the AAA's vision to serve society.

  • Given the need to hit the ground running, a preference will be given to candidates who have substantial, broad experience in AAA Leadership roles, such as, but not restricted to, Member of the Board of Directors, Council Chair, AAA Section or Region leadership roles, or other extensive AAA leadership experience (e.g., as senior editor of AAA publications or as the chair of major committees.)

  • Candidates should exhibit:
    •     a strong interest and experience in accounting scholarship and teaching,
    •     a global perspective,
    •     highly effective communication and presentation skills
    •     a commitment to the shared values outlined by the AAA, including knowledge, integrity, inclusive community, excellence, innovation, and prosperous society.  

  • Candidates are expected to be inclusive, taking into account the needs of a wide variety of members, including affinity groups, retired faculty, non-tenure track faculty, global scholars, two-year faculty, doctoral students, and practitioners, among others.

  • Candidates are expected to place the interests of the AAA as a whole ahead of any AAA Segments.

  • Candidates should have enthusiasm in continuing to focus on understanding and engaging our communities, enhancing our core operations, and expanding our offerings to members. A global mindset and appreciation for and connections with colleagues in practice is important.

  • At least two candidates for this Board position will be placed on the ballot by the AAA Nominations Committee.

  • Additional nominations may be made by a petition signed by not less than one hundred (100) members of the Association submitted to the Chief Executive Officer at least fifteen (15) days prior to the beginning of the election.

 

 

Vice President-Education

Roles and Responsibilities for the position:
 

The Vice President-Education sits on the Board of Directors and, in tandem with the Education Committee (a standing committee of the AAA), provides oversight for education programs in accounting education and advises the Board and AAA Professional Staff on projects and issues focusing on accounting education.

Over the course of this Director’s three-year term, the Vice President-Education attends Board and Council Meetings, is the liaison between the Board and the Education Committee and serves as an ex-officio, nonvoting member of the Council Committee on Awards Committee and as Board of Director Liaison for various education-focused AAA Award Committees. 

The Vice President-Education chairs the Education Committee, and in that role, interacts with national and international accounting education bodies, works closely with the Center for Advancing Accounting Education, and responds as appropriate to the educational efforts of outside constituents, both national and international. The Vice President-Education serves as the AAA representative on the AICPA Academic Executive Committee.

The Vice President-Education makes recommendations to the Board as appropriate and responds on an as-needed basis to address educational issues presented by the President, Board, Chief Executive Officer, or the leadership of Segments.

The Vice President-Education serves a three-year term (2026-2029).

  • Candidates should embrace the American Accounting Association’s vision to be Thought Leaders in Accounting. The Vice President-Education will support the continued implementation of the AAA's vision to serve society.

  • Candidates are expected to be inclusive, taking into account the needs of a wide variety of members, including affinity groups, retired faculty, non-tenure track faculty, global scholars, two-year faculty, doctoral students, and practitioners, among others.

  • The AAA values its relationships with other accounting associations (e.g., IMA, Beta Alpha Psi, AICPA). Candidates for the position of Vice President-Education should therefore be willing to serve as an active liaison with Beta Alpha Psi, the AICPA Academic Executive Committee, and other outside committees and associations, as determined through consultations with the Board.

  • At least two candidates for this Board position will be placed on the ballot by the AAA Nominations Committee.

  • Additional nominations may be made by a petition signed by not less than one hundred (100) members of the Association submitted to the Chief Executive Officer at  least fifteen (15) days prior to the beginning of the election.
     

 

 

Director-Focusing on International

Roles and Responsibilities for the position:
 

The Director-Focusing on International sits on the Board of Directors and assists the Board in identifying ways that the AAA can enhance its global thought leadership in accounting.

Over the course of this Director’s three-year term, the Director-Focusing on International attends Board and Council Meetings and serves as a member of the Membership Advisory Committee

This Director will interact with leaders of accounting academic organizations to: discuss matters of mutual interest (such as exploring global implications of education trends); conduct appropriate research and engage in new idea development; and explore mutually beneficial opportunities for cooperation.

The Director-Focusing on International will pursue ways to better serve and involve the AAA’s non-U.S. members, encourage Segments of the AAA to enhance global engagement and perspectives, and interact with national and international accounting bodies.

This Director will collaborate with the Director-Focusing on Membership to support initiatives focused on expanding non-U.S. member access to services and membership from faculty outside the U.S.

This Director will host the annual in-person Global Gathering held each year in conjunction with the AAA Annual Meeting and the annual virtual Global Gathering held at the beginning of the year. In addition, the Director will participate in discussions related to global gatherings during the year and identify opportunities for members to gain exposure to global issues and perspectives.

The Director-Focusing on International serves a three-year term (2026-2029).

  • Candidates should embrace the American Accounting Association’s vision to be Thought Leaders in Accounting. The Director-Focusing on International will support the continued implementation of the AAA's vision to serve society.

  • Candidates are expected to be inclusive, taking into account the needs of a wide variety of members, including affinity groups, retired faculty, non-tenure track faculty, global scholars, two-year faculty, doctoral students, and practitioners, among others.

  • As the number of international members within the AAA continues to grow, it is important that this Director assists the AAA in strengthening its global thought leadership and in recognizing and supporting perspectives of all members–both U.S. and non-U.S.

  • Candidates should have professional connections with a range of international universities and/or organizations and should have significant international exposure and recognition.

  • At least two candidates for this Board position will be placed on the ballot by the AAA Nominations Committee.

  • Additional nominations may be made by a petition signed by not less than one hundred (100) members of the Association submitted to the Chief Executive Officer at least fifteen (15) days prior to the beginning of the election.

 

 

Director-Focusing on Membership

Roles and Responsibilities for the position:
 

The Director-Focusing on Membership sits on the Board of Directors and, in tandem with the Membership Advisory Committee (MAC), advises the Board on membership-related issues for all current and potential members of the Association and works closely with AAA Professional Staff to assist with current membership initiatives and to identify future membership initiatives.

Over the course of this Director’s three-year term, the Director-Focusing on Membership attends Board and Council Meetings, is the liaison  between the Board and the MAC and serves as Board of Director Liaison for the Accounting Career Center Committee.

The Director-Focusing on Membership chairs the Membership Advisory Committee and will collaborate with the Director-Focusing on International to support initiatives focused on expanding non-U.S. member access to services and membership from faculty outside the U.S. 

The Director-Focusing on Membership serves a three-year term (2026-2029).

  • Candidates should embrace the American Accounting Association’s vision to be Thought Leaders in Accounting. The Director-Focusing on Membership will support the continued implementation of the AAA's vision to serve society.

  • Candidates are expected to be inclusive, taking into account the needs of a wide variety of members, including affinity groups, retired faculty, non-tenure track faculty, global scholars, two-year faculty, doctoral students, and practitioners, among others.

  • Candidates for this position should be enthusiastic about developing and leading initiatives related to an expansive set of opportunities to support the accounting academy and have an appreciation for the range of services the AAA provides to add value to its members.

  • At least two candidates for this Board position will be placed on the ballot by the Council Ballot Committee.

  • Additional nominations may be made by a petition signed by not less than one hundred (100) members of the Association submitted to the Chief Executive Officer at least fifteen (15) days prior to the beginning of the election.

NOTE: AAA Members may nominate multiple qualified candidates for each position. There is no limit to the number of candidates you may nominate for each of the open Board positions.

  2. PLEASE DO NOT CONTACT nominees in advance. Nominees are reviewed first and then asked if they agree to move forward in the process and for additional information. Nominees will be contacted if they are in the final round of those being considered to be placed on a slate for a Board position.
