Dishonesty in Financial Advice and Promises

We review new experimental findings on dishonest financial reporting, the settings in which we expect to find it, and remedies. Specifically, we show that the reporting party will be strategically truthful in order to build trust and then exploit that trust when the stakes are high. We continue with insights on dishonest promises for action and the breaking of trust. Specifically, we show that enabling a channel for promises is detrimental to trust, and especially so when there are chances for plausible deniability.

His discussions and commentaries have built bridges between the experimental traditions in economics and psychology, and his mentorship has launched and propelled the careers of many very productive members of our scholarly community.
