Research Mentoring Session

The Accounting Information Systems New Scholars Consortium will be held jointly at the 2024 Joint Midyear Meeting of the AIS and SET Sections from 8:00 am to 5:30 pm on Thursday, January 25, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia.

The AIS New Scholars Consortium is open to doctoral students and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year AIS assistant professors who are members of the AAA AIS or SET Sections.

PhD students registered for the Consortium may also attend the Midyear meeting.

Note: Seating for the New Scholars Consortium is limited. Applicants will receive a decision by November 20, 2023. If you have any questions about the Consortium, please contact the Consortium Chair, Ann Dzuranin, adzuranin@niu.edu

  • Faculty in their first 3 years after completion of their PhD

Topics Covered:

Morning Session:

  • The Reality of Researching in AIS
  • What are the pros/cons of researching in AIS.
  • How to cultivate and maintain co-author relationships.
  • How to be a good reviewer.
  • How to respond to reviewer comments.
  • The Reality of Teaching in AIS
  • How to balance being efficient and effective.
  • Where to find resources.
  • What are the best practices for increasing student engagement.
  • How to balance the demands of added content for the CPA Evolution new exam.

Afternoon Session:

PhD Students

  • Managing the dissertation process.
  • Creating a research pipeline.
  • Pros/Cons of accepting a job at a teaching vs. research university.
  • Managing the interview process.

New Faculty

  • Managing the tenure process. 
  • Purposeful service choices.
  • Building relationships for tenure review writers. 
  • Balancing teaching and research. 

Research Mentoring Session:

  • Attendees that submit a proposal or paper prior to December 4th will be paired with senior researchers to receive guidance and feedback.

Registration/Hotel Information
Up to 30 accepted student participants will have all meeting fees waived (inclusive of the 2024 Joint Midyear Meeting of the AIS and Section fee). The AIS will cover lodging at the conference hotel for one night at the rate of $220 per night plus taxes and fees for the any student and up to 10 new faculty who gets accepted to the Consortium. Hotel accommodations will be reimbursed AFTER the meeting, provided that the student attends the full consortium and Midyear Meeting. Note: All names of the individuals who stayed in the room need to be on the room folio for reimbursement. If you share a room, each student will receive one night at the rate of $220 per night plus taxes and fees.

Consortium attendees should make their reservations directly with the hotel and will need to provide a credit card number to the hotel. The deadline for hotel reservations is January 3, 2024 but we cannot guarantee that additional rooms will be available once our block of rooms is sold out, even if the block is sold out before the deadline.

Be sure to do this before applying to the Consortium because you will need your AAA Member number to complete the application.

After the application deadline, Ann Dzuranin will review those who applied and will notify the 30 accepted participants about their participation.
