8:30 am – 10:00 am | Session 1: The Role of Competency Integration in Career Advancement Personal Development 1.5 CH Speaker: Kellie Fischer, CFO of the Texas Rangers Summary: Which competencies are important for success in accounting today? Gain perspective from practice as Kellie Fischer, the CFO of the Texas Rangers, shares her thoughts, insights, and experiences on the competencies needed to build a successful accounting career. She will share personal stories from her 16 years of working in the business of sports, facing financial challenges, and even managing a bankruptcy filing. She will also discuss her experiences of overseeing recent accounting graduates to seasoned accounting management personnel. Session 2: Teaching Holistic Decision Making – Developing Habitual Competency Integration Behavioral Ethics 1.5 CH Speaker: Nathan Stuart, University of Wisconsin–Oshkosh Summary: Managers’ work boils down to one task: allocating scarce resources. Making such decisions effectively requires integration of competencies from all components of the Joint Curriculum Task Force’s model, and can be a defining skill for career development. Developing this ability in our students is one of our most important responsibilities. In this session, I will present an approach for teaching decision analysis that requires enumeration of quantitative and qualitative dimensions of a decision and explicit consideration of the implied value of qualitative factors. I will also address the burden teaching competency integration places on us as educators and what it takes to meet the challenge. 10:30 am – 12:00 pm | Session 1: Integrating Character and Ethics into Managerial Accounting Curricula Behavioral Ethics 1.5 CH Speaker: Marty Stuebs, Baylor University Summary: The Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffet, is credited with emphasizing the importance of integrity and character development by saying, “In looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if they don’t have the first, the other two will kill you.” Yet, perhaps you can share my realization, after honest reflection, that most of my managerial accounting instructional efforts primarily focus on developing students’ intellectual competencies with, at best, only cursory attention given to professional character development and integrity. How could the development of intellectual competencies be substantively balanced with the development of professional character and integrity? This session will provide attendees with strategies, tools, resources, suggestions, and shared discussion for incorporating professional character, integrity and ethics development into balanced instructional efforts. The challenge facing accounting educators is how to teach our students to analyze huge data sets in a manner that extracts value-added insights. In this session, I will discuss ways to integrate critical thinking and data analytic skills into topics, such as cost estimation, typically covered in managerial accounting courses. I will focus on examples designed for intermediate-level undergraduate courses but I will discuss ways to adapt them for graduate-level courses. 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm | Session 1: Extending the Case Study to Simulations for a More Interactive Learning Experience Accounting 1.5 CH Speaker: Albie Brooks, University of Melbourne Summary: Many of us use case-studies to facilitate the study of management accounting and control issues in an organizational context. In this session, we explore the use of an extension to the case study: digital-based simulations – as a vehicle to provide students with an enhanced learning experience. A digital based simulation posited in the Wine industry, centered on balanced scorecard construction and divisional-level decision making, will be used to demonstrate the benefits of a student experience using this pedagogical approach. Specific guidance will be provided as to how simulations can be used successfully in the classroom. Slides: using simulations presentation 2016.ppt Session 2: An Experiential Learning Exercise in Cost Accounting Accounting 1.5 CH Speaker: Monte Swain, Brigham Young University Summary: Typically, students remember the process-costing topic as one of the most difficult. Increasingly, process costing as a topic is excluded from managerial and cost accounting courses. However, regardless of whether or not students will ever find themselves in a process-based manufacturing organization, this traditionally challenging topic can actually be used to let students discover for themselves that the flow of cost accounting makes sense. By letting students experience for themselves how process costing works, instructors can use the very first day of class (whether it be an undergraduate intro course or an MBA course) to create an energized foundation for the students’ learning across the rest of the course curriculum. Session attendees, by laying aside for a moment their expertise, will experience how their students can discover their own understanding of complicated cost topics, including balance sheet asset cost versus income statement expense, accounting for direct and indirect costs, allocating costs based on activity, and the effect of absorption costing on management behavior – all without a lecture or reading a single textbook chapter. 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm | Improv Tools for the Sage on the Stage (How The Second City changed my class) Communications 1.5 CH Speaker: Tim West, Northern Illinois University Summary: In 2009, Professor West was failing to connect with the students in his graduate class. In fact, he questioned whether he was simply burned out or his career was ending. After almost 20 years of successful teaching, he questioned what could be done to improve his performance and improve student engagement. He wanted students to think creatively, rely on each other and value their classes. In essence, he wanted them to care – about themselves, each other and Northern Illinois University. Out of desperation, he decided to call the Harvard of Imrov Comedy – The Second City. The Second City alumni are a who’s who of comedy and include Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner and John Belushi. Professor West’s workshop will provide hands-on demonstrations of how to use improve tools in your classes. The educational goals: (1) increase classroom engagement, (2) promote an “I’ve got your back” mentality, and (3) encourage critical thinking. Attendees will walk away with a dozen tools and techniques they can use immediately in their classes. WARNING: You need not be funny to attend!
