Call for Nominations for AAA Board of Directors
3-Year Terms Begin August 2024


Nominations are now being accepted for the following three positions:

President-Elect
Vice President Research & Publications
Director-Focusing on Segments

  • Each year the Board of Directors (BOD) develops a Call for Nominations for Board positions to be filled in that year’s election.
  • For each position on the ballot, the Call for Nominations includes the roles and responsibilities for the position and guidance on key interests and capabilities based on the Board's analysis of current projects, including ongoing Board positions and mission-related initiatives.
  • Student Members, in accordance with the Association Bylaws, may not hold an elected or appointed office.
  • All members are encouraged to provide qualified nominations based on the roles and responsibilities and key interests and capabilities for the Board position. Members submit nominations using the brief Nominations Form (see below) by Thursday, August 31, 2023 at 11:59 pm Eastern.
  • The AAA Nominations Committee (seven members comprising the two most-recent AAA past-presidents, and five at-large members who are elected by Council from a slate of non-Council members nominated by AAA members) and the Council Ballot Committee (all of Council, excluding the Board of Directors) receive and review all qualified nominations for their allocated Board positions in that year, thoroughly assess the match of each nominee with the expertise required for each position (based on roles and responsibilities and key interests and capabilities), and place at least two candidates on the slate.
  • Final selections among the candidates on the slate will be determined by a vote of the membership in early 2024.
  • New Board members take office on Wednesday of the Annual Meeting in August 2024.

President-Elect

Roles and Responsibilities for the position:


During their three-year term, the President-Elect serves for one year in that role (2024-2025), then for one year as President (2025-2026), followed by one year as Past President (2026-2027).

Over the course of their three-year term, the individual attends Board Meetings, Council Meetings, and Management Team Meetings. The individual also attends and/or presents periodically at Section and Region Meetings and meetings beyond the AAA. 

The President-Elect is a key member of the AAA's leadership team, playing a major role in supporting ongoing strategic initiatives and further developing the AAA's strategy.  Specifically, the President-Elect participates as a leader on the Board of Directors and as a member of the Management Team.  The President-Elect also serves on the Finance Committee, and as an ex-officio member of the Governance Committee.

Once President, responsibilities focus on leading the Management Team's discussions of the strategic direction of the Association. The President chairs the Board of Directors and presides at the Annual Meeting and Business Meeting of the Association. Except for committee members appointed by the Council and previously appointed to terms that have not yet expired, the President and Management Team have authority to appoint members to committees and task forces, and to remove members of committees and task forces. The President communicates to the membership on issues of interest. The President represents the AAA to other domestic and international professional and educational accounting associations. The President serves as Board liaison for the COSO, Doctoral Consortium, Governance, New Faculty, and Trueblood Seminars Committees, and other committees as requested.

The Past President serves on the Management Team, the Nominations Committee, the Finance Committee and other committees as requested.  The Past President continues to sustain strategic initiatives of the Association and provide continuity and cohesion on the Board of Directors.

Guidance from the Board of Directors on key interests
and capabilities for the position:

  • Candidates should embrace the American Accounting Association’s vision to be Thought Leaders in Accounting. The President-Elect will support the continued implementation of the AAA's vision to serve society.

  • Given the need to hit the ground running, a preference will be given to candidates who have substantial, broad experience in AAA Leadership roles, such as, but not restricted to, Member of the Board of Directors, Council Chair, AAA Section or Region leadership roles, or other extensive AAA leadership experience (e.g. as senior editor of AAA publications or as the chair of major committees.)

  • Candidates should exhibit:
    •     a strong interest and experience in accounting scholarship and teaching,
    •     a global perspective,
    •     highly effective communication and presentation skills
    •     commitment to DEI

  • Candidates are expected to be inclusive when considering the needs of a wide variety of members, including minoritized identity groups, affinity groups (e.g., LGBTQ), retired faculty, non-tenure track faculty, global scholars, two-year faculty, doctoral students, and practitioners, among others.

  • Candidates are expected to place the interests of the AAA as a whole ahead of any AAA Segments.

  • The President-Elect should have enthusiasm in continuing to focus on understanding and engaging our communities, enhancing our core operations, and expanding our offerings to members.  A global mindset and appreciation for and connections with colleagues in practice is important.

  • At least two candidates for this Board position will be placed on the ballot by the AAA Nominations Committee.

  • Additional nominations may be made by a petition signed by not less than one hundred (100) members of the Association submitted to the Chief Executive Officer at least fifteen (15) days prior to the beginning of the election.

 

 

Vice President-Research & Publications

Roles and Responsibilities for the position:
 

The Vice President-Research & Publications is responsible for developing  and administering programs that advance accounting research. While serving on the Board, the Vice President is a member of the standing Research & Publications Committee and attends Board and Council meetings.

The Vice President provides the perspective of research and publications to decision-making considered by the Board. The Vice President serves as Board liaison for the Research & Publications Committee and its subcommittees.

The Vice President oversees the Association-wide research-related awards process. These awards include the AAA-AACSB-RRBM Award for Research Impacting Societal Challenges Committee, both Competitive Manuscript Award Screening and Selection Committees, both Notable and Distinguished Contribution to Accounting Literature Awards Screening and Selection Committees, and the Deloitte Foundation Wildman Medal Award. 

The Vice President may serve on strategic task forces identified by the Board related to accounting scholarship and publications as they emerge. Topics might include revenue and cost allocation decisions related to AAA publications, publications ethics, and publications policies.

The Vice President interacts with the Research Directors of other national and international accounting organizations. 

The Vice President-Research & Publications serves a three-year term (2024-2027).
 

Guidance from the Board of Directors on key interests
and capabilities for the position:

  • Candidates should embrace the American Accounting Association’s vision to be Thought Leaders in Accounting. The Vice President-Research & Publications will support the continued implementation of the AAA’s vision to serve society.

  • Candidates are expected to be inclusive when considering the needs of a wide variety of members, including minoritized identity groups, affinity groups (e.g., LGBTQ), retired faculty, non-tenure track faculty, global scholars, two-year faculty, doctoral students, and practitioners, among others.

  • Candidates are expected to place the interests of the AAA as a whole ahead of any AAA Segments.

  • Candidates should have strong leadership skills, experience in a range of Association activities, particularly in editorial, author, and reviewer roles.

  • Candidates for this position should be enthusiastic about developing and leading initiatives to increase the value and reach of the AAA's research mission and journals and have an appreciation for the range of research and publication-related services the AAA provides to add value for its members.

  • At least two candidates for this Board position will be placed on the ballot by the AAA Nominations Committee.

  • Additional nominations may be made by a petition signed by not less than one hundred (100) members of the Association submitted to the Chief Executive Officer at  least fifteen (15) days prior to the beginning of the election.

 

 

Director-Focusing on Segments

Roles and Responsibilities for the position:
 

The Director-Focusing on Segments works with Section and Region leaders, AAA Council, as well as the AAA Professional Staff, to support and enhance the segments (a term which includes all sections and regions) of the Association. Activities involve developing initiatives and sharing best practices that contribute to segment sustainability and growth – such as maximizing the effectiveness of segment leadership, establishing volunteer pipelines, creating engaging meetings, building membership, and ensuring meaningful interaction with professionals. These activities are shared through, and often grown from, webinars and an annual two-hour workshop, modes of communication and collaboration between the Director, AAA Professional Staff, and Segment leaders that have become established, successful activities. In addition, this Director advises the AAA Board on segment-related issues.

This Director will assist the AAA leadership in strengthening its thought leadership and in recognizing and supporting perspectives of all of its members.

The Director-Focusing on Segments will be a liaison between the Board and Segment Leaders and will attend Board and Council meetings. The Director also serves as Board liaison for the Meetings Model Committee.

The Director-Focusing on Segments serves a three-year term (2024-2027).

  • Candidates should embrace the American Accounting Association’s vision to be Thought Leaders in Accounting. The Director-Focusing on Segments will continue implementation of the next strategic steps of this vision to expand its reach to serve society.

  • Candidates are expected to be inclusive when considering the needs of a wide variety of members, including minoritized identity groups, affinity groups (e.g., LGBTQ), retired faculty, non-tenure track faculty, global scholars, two-year faculty, doctoral students, and practitioners, among others.

  • Candidates are expected to place the interests of the AAA as a whole ahead of any AAA Segments.

  • Candidates for this position should have strong leadership skills, experience in a range of Association activities, particularly leadership experience in one or more Sections or Regions.

  • At least two candidates for this Board position will be placed on the ballot by the Council Ballot Committee.

  • Additional nominations may be made by a petition signed by not less than one hundred (100) members of the Association submitted to the Chief Executive Officer at least fifteen (15) days prior to the beginning of the election.

NOTE: AAA Members may nominate multiple qualified candidates for each position. There is no limit to the number of candidates you may nominate for each of the three open Board positions.

  1. Complete a nomination form (Word Document) for each of your nominees by clicking on the appropriate links below and following the instructions on the form. 
  2. You do NOT need to reach out to your nominees in advance. Nominees are reviewed first and then asked for agreement to move forward in the process and for additional information. Nominees will be contacted if they are in the final round of those being considered to be placed on a slate for a Board position.
